Ian McShane

I love Lovejoy, who was the cheekiest
of antiques dealings, with his
very English menagerie of folks
that know just how to locate the
prized treasures of the cotswolds
and fight criminals amongst all
kinds of adventures. He also had
a sidecar motorbike that you just
wanted to scoot about in.

If you were a kid like me
when Ian was performing in this
quaint show, then you would have had
the same reaction to hearing that
he was suddenly a huge deal
in a western town where he would
swear like a sailor
and antagonise Timothy Olyphant
on a daily basis!

Lovejoy is now a cowboy??
Can my mind even take this?
Now he is famous? And he is helping
Keanu Reeves to murder many
assassins from a continental hotel?
And he is a rude dad to Andy Samberg,
world’s most earnest amateur stuntman?

I love that Ian McShane found glory
in later career and that everyone
can now see what 11 year old me did,
even if I did think the antique stuff
was a little over my head. Not
A man who watched Bargain Hunt.
